Paula Brewer Byron is an award-winning communications professional with a specialty in—and passion for—both print and digital publications. For a dozen years, she edited Harvard Medicine and the magazine it superseded, the Harvard Medical Alumni Bulletin. She has also served as editor of Illumination, the annual magazine of the Virginia Tech College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences; Carilion Medicine, the biannual magazine of a regional health system; the Silent Spring Review, a publication of Silent Spring Institute, an environmental research nonprofit; the Harvard AIDS Review; and many newsletters, both digital and print.
In addition, Byron has edited four books: a 750-page textbook on AIDS in Africa, two books on the AIDS epidemic in Nigeria, and From the Pain Come the Dream: The Recipients of the Reebok Human Rights Award, which the New York Public Library named to its recommended book list for teenagers.
Byron has long been recognized for her inspired editorial vision, creativity, ingenuity with limited resources, knack for exceeding expectations, and championship of the serial comma.
