Offering Playful Elements: Hokie How-To

“Hokie How-To”—a compendium of practical and impractical tips from Virginia Tech alumni and faculty members—appeared in the 2019–20 issue of Illumination, the magazine of the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences. I developed this feature as a playful contrast to a serious, four-article special report on the intersection of technologies and the humanities.

I collaborated with the authors in creating the essays. I interviewed all but one (Rick Devens); helped them shape their stories; added boldfaced, often playful introductions to the tips; and edited each entry.

The photos of the sandhill crane (left) and the opening shot of a cypress came courtesy of an alumnus, wildlife photographer Mac Stone.
